Our Government Structure
The City of Laurens adopted the Mayor-Council form of government in 1976. The City of Laurens is divided into six wards, and elections are non-partisan. The Mayor is elected at-large, and the six Council members are elected from single-member districts. General elections are held on the first Tuesday of March in all odd numbered years. Anyone seeking election should contact the Laurens Voter Registration Office at (864)984- 4431. Also, for general information concerning voter registration contact scvotes.org.
The Mayor is the presiding officer at Council meetings. Regular Council meetings are held on the third Tuesday of each month at 5:30 P.M., and are held in Council Chambers at City Hall on the second floor. City Hall is located at 126 East Public Square, Laurens, South Carolina 29360. If you wish to address City Council, you will need to fill out a form with the City Clerk's Office before noon the Wednesday prior to the next meeting.
The Mayor and City Council strive to serve all members of the community. They strive to provide a quality of life in which citizens can have a safe, comfortable and clean environment. All city parks and recreational facilities are smoke free environments. Our children are our greatest asset, and we work to provide them with safe recreational programs and areas where they can play and strengthen both their minds and their bodies. We are also dedicated to serve our elderly citizens who are a valuable resource and remind us of our distinguished history.
We are always mindful of the need to encourage our businesses, both seasoned and new. We work diligently to promote new businesses to relocate to our beautiful city. With our many state of the art recreational venues, unique restaurants and shops, we are poised to welcome people, not only from nearby communities, but from all over the country as well.
Our beautiful Historical Downtown Square is a beautiful focal point for the essence of our city - "Charming, Beautiful, Quaint, Historical and Welcoming". We have all the components for southern hospitality at its finest and the sophistication of the larger cities. Although our city is rapidly growing, we have pledged to never lose our "small town" values.
We eagerly look forward to having you drop in on us for a visit, and we will not be surprised if you decide to stay
